Yilan City

Yilan City, historically spelled Ilan or I-lan, is the capital of Yilan County, Taiwan. It is on the north side of Lanyang River. The first Han Chinese settled there in 1802.

The Yilan Plain, in which the city is located, was once known as the Kapsulan (蛤仔難/甲子蘭) Plain or the Komalan (噶瑪蘭) Plain. These names, as well as that of Yilan itself, are derived from the Kavalan tribe of Taiwanese aborigines.

  • Area: 29.40 km²
  • Population: 94,188 people (2004)

Famous quotes containing the word city:

The surprise of animals... in and out, cats and dogs and a milk goat and chickens and guinea hens, all taken for granted, as if man was intended to live on terms of friendly intercourse with the rest of creation instead of huddling in isolation on the fourteenth floor of an apartment house in a city where animals occurred behind bars in the zoo.
    Elizabeth Janeway (b. 1913)
