Xenophage

Xenophage

In entomology xenophagy (Greek "strange" + "eating") is a change or reversal in insect diet, such as a herbivorous diet becoming carnivorous or vice versa. It can include predators becoming necrophagous, and coprophages becoming necrophagous or carnivorous. This change can be similar to allotrophy (from Greek "other-nutrient", and to be distinguished from mineral allotropy) as in the case of the 7-spot ladybird, which can diversify a diet of aphids (plant lice) to sometimes include pollen. There are several apparent cases of allotrophy in Israeli Longitarsus.
