Whyte Notation - Limitations

Limitations

The main limitation of the Whyte Notation in classifying locomotives was that it did not cover non-standard steam locomotive types such as Shay locomotives, which use geared trucks rather than driving wheels. This led to the design of other forms of classification. The most commonly used system in Europe outside the United Kingdom is the UIC classification scheme, based on German practice, which can more completely define the exact layout of a locomotive.

Famous quotes containing the word limitations:

The motion picture made in Hollywood, if it is to create art at all, must do so within such strangling limitations of subject and treatment that it is a blind wonder it ever achieves any distinction beyond the purely mechanical slickness of a glass and chromium bathroom.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

The limitations of pleasure cannot be overcome by more pleasure.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
