South African Cuisine

The cuisine of South Africa is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine", as it has had a variety of multicultural sources and stages. The cuisine can be generalized as:

  • Cookery practiced by indigenous people of Africa such as the Sotho and Nguni-speaking people.
  • Cookery that emerged from several waves of colonialisation and immigration introduced during the colonial period by white European people of Dutch, German, French and Asian-Indonesian descent (since 1652) Afrikaner, British descent (since 1805 and 1820 Settlers) and their Asian slaves or servants - this includes the cuisine of the so-called Cape Malay people, which has many characteristics of Indonesia and cooking styles from neighbouring colonial cultures such as Portuguese Mozambique.

Famous quotes containing the words south, african and/or cuisine:

Indeed, I believe that in the future, when we shall have seized again, as we will seize if we are true to ourselves, our own fair part of commerce upon the sea, and when we shall have again our appropriate share of South American trade, that these railroads from St. Louis, touching deep harbors on the gulf, and communicating there with lines of steamships, shall touch the ports of South America and bring their tribute to you.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

The fact that white people readily and proudly call themselves “white,” glorify all that is white, and whitewash all that is glorified, becomes unnatural and bigoted in its intent only when these same whites deny persons of African heritage who are Black the natural and inalienable right to readily—proudly—call themselves “black,” glorify all that is black, and blackwash all that is glorified.
    Abbey Lincoln (b. 1930)

Thank God for the passing of the discomforts and vile cuisine of the age of chivalry!
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
