Shikotan
Shikotan (Russian: Шикотан; Japanese: 色丹島; Ainu: シコタン or シコタㇴ) is one of the bigger islands of the Kuril Islands, which are part of the Russian Federation. It is one of the four southernmost islands which Japan maintains a claim for. It is one of the islands the Soviet Union agreed to transfer to Japan in the event of a peace treaty between the two countries. The name of "Shikotan" derives from the Ainu language and means "land with big communities."
