Sapping

Sapping is a term used in siege operations, describing the digging of tunnels under enemy walls or fortifications. These tunnels had wooden supports which could be burned, partially collapsing the wall above. "Saps" as the tunnels are called, were excavated by brigades of trained soldiers, often called sappers, because they dug the saps.
