Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) is a component of the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) suite. MLD is used by IPv6 routers for discovering multicast listeners on a directly attached link, much like IGMP is used in IPv4. The protocol is embedded in ICMPv6 instead of using a separate protocol. MLDv1 is similar to IGMPv2 and MLDv2 similar to IGMPv3. The protocol is described in RFC 3810 which has been updated by RFC 4604.
Several operating system support MLDv2:
- Windows Vista and later
- FreeBSD since release 8.0
- The Linux kernel since 2.5.68
Famous quotes containing the words listener and/or discovery:
“Be a listener only, keep within yourself, and endeavor to establish with yourself the habit of silence, especially in politics.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“We early arrive at the great discovery that there is one mind common to all individual men: that what is individual is less than what is universal ... that error, vice and disease have their seat in the superficial or individual nature.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
