Morgan Tsvangirai - Movement For Democratic Change

Movement For Democratic Change

In 1999 Tsvangirai founded and organised the Movement for Democratic Change, an opposition party opposed to President Robert Mugabe and the ZANU-PF ruling party. He helped to defeat the February 2000 constitutional referendum, successfully campaigning against it along with the National Constitutional Assembly.

Tsvangirai lost the March 2002 presidential election to Mugabe. The election provoked widespread allegations that Mugabe had rigged the election through the use of violence, media bias, and manipulation of the voters' roll leading to abnormally high pro-Mugabe turnout in some areas.

Famous quotes containing the words movement for, movement, democratic and/or change:

I’m real ambivalent about [working mothers]. Those of use who have been in the women’s movement for a long time know that we’ve talked a good game of “go out and fulfill your dreams” and “be everything you were meant to be.” But by the same token, we want daughters-in-law who are going to stay home and raise our grandchildren.
    Erma Bombeck (20th century)

I am haunted by interrupted acts,
    introspective as a leper, enchanted
    by a repulsive clew,
a gross and fugitive movement of the limbs.
Is this the love that shook the lights to flame?
    Muriel Rukeyser (1913–1980)

The idea that you can merchandise candidates for high office like breakfast cereal—that you can gather votes like box tops—is, I think, the ultimate indignity to the democratic process.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)

If we are to change our world view, images have to change. The artist now has a very important job to do. He’s not a little peripheral figure entertaining rich people, he’s really needed.
    David Hockney (b. 1937)
