Importance
The quality to be an "observed fall", makes these meteorites relevant for several reasons.
First of all these meteorites can be used to make statistics about the abundance of the different kinds of meteorites that fall on the Earth without any bias from weathering and from easiness of identification. For example iron meteorites last longer to weathering and are easier to identify as "strange" stones: for this reason the ratio of iron meteorites among (approved, non Antarctic) finds (6.7%) is different from the ratio among observed falls (4.4%).
Falls are also fresher (low weathered, well preserved material) and are therefore more interesting to scientists. Historically they were also the most important proof to understand and accept the extraterrestrial origin of meteorites.

Famous quotes containing the word importance:
“Whoever deliberately attempts to insure confidentiality with another person is usually in doubt as to whether he inspires that persons confidence in him. One who is sure that he inspires confidence attaches little importance to confidentiality.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community. By carefully chronicling the current events of contemporary life, it shows us of what very little importance such events really are. By invariably discussing the unnecessary, it makes us understand what things are requisite for culture, and what are not.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“There is, I think, no point in the philosophy of progressive education which is sounder than its emphasis upon the importance of the participation of the learner in the formation of the purposes which direct his activities in the learning process, just as there is no defect in traditional education greater than its failure to secure the active cooperation of the pupil in construction of the purposes involved in his studying.”
—John Dewey (18591952)
