Production and Main Reactions
Racemic malic acid is produced industrially by the double hydration of maleic anhydride. In 2000, American production capacity was 5000 tonnes per year. Both enantiomers may be separated by chiral resolution of the racemic mixture, and the (S)- enantiomer may be specifically obtained by fermentation of fumaric acid.
Self-condensation of malic acid with fuming sulfuric acid gives the pyrone coumalic acid:
Malic acid was important in the discovery of the Walden inversion and the Walden cycle, in which (-)-malic acid first is converted into (+)-chlorosuccinic acid by action of phosphorus pentachloride. Wet silver oxide then converts the chlorine compound to (+)-malic acid, which then reacts with PCl5 to the (-)-chlorosuccinic acid. The cycle is completed when silver oxide takes this compound back to (-)-malic acid.

Famous quotes containing the words production and, production, main and/or reactions:
“By bourgeoisie is meant the class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of social production and employers of wage labor. By proletariat, the class of modern wage laborers who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labor power in order to live.”
—Friedrich Engels (18201895)
“Perestroika basically is creating material incentives for the individual. Some of the comrades deny that, but I cant see it any other way. In that sense human nature kinda goes backwards. Its a step backwards. You have to realize the people werent quite ready for a socialist production system.”
—Gus Hall (b. 1910)
“My main wish is to get my books into other peoples rooms, and to keep other peoples books out of mine.”
—Samuel Butler (18351902)
“Prolonged, indiscriminate reviewing of books is a quite exceptionally thankless, irritating and exhausting job. It not only involves praising trash but constantly inventing reactions towards books about which one has no spontaneous feeling whatever.”
—George Orwell (19031950)
