Kurt Hahn - Return To Germany

Return To Germany

Hahn divided his time between Britain and Germany after the war. He founded several new boarding schools based on the principles of Salem and Gordonstoun: Anavryta, Greece (1949); Louisenlund, Germany (1949); Battisborough, England (1955); Rannoch, Scotland (1959); Box Hill, England (1959); Athenian School, USA (1965). He resigned from the headship of Gordonstoun on health grounds and returned to Hermannsberg near Salem in 1953. He died in Ravensburg on the 14th December 1974 and was buried in Salem.

Famous quotes containing the words return to, return and/or germany:

Each work of art excludes the world, concentrates attention on itself. For the time it is the only thing worth doing—to do just that; be it a sonnet, a statue, a landscape, an outline head of Caesar, or an oration. Presently we return to the sight of another that globes itself into a whole as did the first, for example, a beautiful garden; and nothing seems worth doing in life but laying out a garden.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    The soul establishes itself.
But how far can it swim out through the eyes
And still return safely to its nest?
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

It is the emotions to which one objects in Germany most of all.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)
