Hugh Gaitskell - Marriage and Personal Life

Marriage and Personal Life

He was married to Anna Dora Gaitskell from 1937, who became a Labour life peer one year after his death, but it is widely known that he had a number of affairs, even during his time in public life with the socialite Ann Fleming, the wife of James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

In private, Hugh Gaitskell was said to be humorous and fun loving, with a love of ballroom dancing. This contrasted with his stern public image.

Famous quotes containing the words marriage, personal and/or life:

Adultery is the vice of equivocation.
It is not marriage but a mockery of it, a merging that mixes love and dread together like jackstraws. There is no understanding of contentment in adultery.... You belong to each other in what together you’ve made of a third identity that almost immediately cancels your own. There is a law in art that proves it. Two colors are proven complimentary only when forming that most desolate of all colors—neutral gray.
    Alexander Theroux (b. 1940)

Women’s rights is not only an abstraction, a cause; it is also a personal affair. It is not only about “us”; it is also about me and you. Just the two of us.
    Toni Morrison (b. 1931)

The moment one accosts a stranger or is accosted by him is above all in this life the moment of drama.... Whoever we meet watches us intently at the quick, strange moment of meeting, to see whether we are disposed to be friendly.
    Haniel Long (1888–1956)
