Famous quotes containing the word generosity:
“Art can never match the luxury and superfluity of Nature. In the former all is seen; it cannot afford concealed wealth, and is niggardly in comparison; but Nature, even when she is scant and thin outwardly, satisfies us still by the assurance of a certain generosity at the roots.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Surely, tis one step towards acting well, to think worthily of our nature; and as in common life, the way to make a man honest, is, to suppose him so ... so here, to set some value upon ourselves, enables us to support the character ... of generosity and virtue.”
—Laurence Sterne (17131768)
“My generosity finally cedes to her hatred.”
—Pierre Corneille (16061684)
