In the physical sciences and in telecommunication, the term frequency shift has the following meanings:
- Any change in frequency
- A Doppler shift
- Any change in the frequency of a radio transmitter or oscillator. (Note: In the radio regime, frequency shift is also called rf shift.)
- Frequency-shift telegraphy
- In facsimile, a frequency modulation system where one frequency represents picture black and another frequency represents picture white. Frequencies between these two limits may represent shades of gray
- An intentional frequency change used for modulation purposes

Famous quotes containing the words frequency and/or shift:
“One is apt to be discouraged by the frequency with which Mr. Hardy has persuaded himself that a macabre subject is a poem in itself; that, if there be enough of death and the tomb in ones theme, it needs no translation into art, the bold statement of it being sufficient.”
—Rebecca West (18921983)
“The frantic search of five-year-olds for friends can thus be seen to forecast the beginnings of a basic shift in the parent-child relationship, a shift which will occur gradually over many long years, and in which a child needs not only the support of child allies engaged in the same struggle but also the understanding of his parents.”
—Dorothy H. Cohen (20th century)
