Federal District (Brazil)
The Federal District (Portuguese: Distrito Federal; ) is one of 27 federative units of Brazil. In its territory is located the federal capital, Brasília. Was founded on April 21, 1960. Located in a region called Planalto Central, or Central Plateau, the Federal District is divided in 31 administrative regions. Brasília — the seat of the three branches of the federal government of Brazil (legislative, executive and judiciary) — is the main attraction of this dry area, whose climate has only two seasons. During the dry season (winter), the humidity can reach critical levels, mainly in the peak hours of the hottest days. The artificial lake of Paranoá, with almost 40 km2 (15 sq mi) and 500 million cubic metres (410,000 acre·ft) of water, was built exactly to minimize the severe dry, climatic conditions of winter in the cerrado vegetation. Besides businessmen and politicians, the region also attracts mystics and there are several syncretic and spiritualistic temples.

Famous quotes containing the words federal and/or district:
“There are always those who are willing to surrender local self-government and turn over their affairs to some national authority in exchange for a payment of money out of the Federal Treasury. Whenever they find some abuse needs correction in their neighborhood, instead of applying the remedy themselves they seek to have a tribunal sent on from Washington to discharge their duties for them, regardless of the fact that in accepting such supervision they are bartering away their freedom.”
—Calvin Coolidge (18721933)
“Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.”
—Rebecca West (18921983)
