Fat Client - Advantages of Thick Clients

Advantages of Thick Clients

  • Lower server requirements. A thick client server does not require as high a level of performance as a thin client server (since the thick clients themselves do much of the application processing). This results in drastically cheaper servers.
  • Working offline. Thick clients have advantages in that a constant connection to the central server is often not required.
  • Better multimedia performance. Thick clients have advantages in multimedia-rich applications that would be bandwidth intensive if fully served. For example, thick clients are well suited for video gaming.
  • More flexibility. On some operating systems software products are designed for personal computers that have their own local resources. Running this software in a thin client environment can be difficult.
  • Using existing infrastructure. As many people now have very fast local PCs, they already have the infrastructure to run thick clients at no extra cost.
  • Higher server capacity. The more work that is carried out by the client, the less the server needs to do, increasing the number of users each server can support.

Famous quotes containing the words advantages of, advantages, thick and/or clients:

When the manipulations of childhood are a little larceny, they may grow and change with the child into qualities useful and admire in the grown-up world. When they are the futile struggle for love and concern and protection, they may become the warped and ruthless machinations of adults who seek in the advantages of power what they could never win as children.
    Leontine Young (20th century)

There is no one thoroughly despicable. We cannot descend much lower than an idiot; and an idiot has some advantages over a wise man.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)

It was the bad ax-helve someone had sold me
“Made on machine,” he said, plowing the grain
With thick thumbnail to show how it ran
    Across the handle’s long-drawn serpentine,
Like the two strokes across a dollar sign.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

...a lot of my people are models. I like that for them. I admire models, so I think that’s right for my people. ...I love it when I have an important [client]. And the pictures and awards. One of my clients has these television awards—a beautiful statue of a woman. I think it’s an Emmy. People would be lucky to get one. She has two. I think that’s great.
    Elaine Strong (b. 1934)
