Famous quotes containing the words european, economic, social and/or committee:

I can never suppose this country so far lost to all ideas of self-importance as to be willing to grant America independence; if that could ever be adopted I shall despair of this country being ever preserved from a state of inferiority and consequently falling into a very low class among the European States.
    George III (1738–1820)

If in the earlier part of the century, middle-class children suffered from overattentive mothers, from being “mother’s only accomplishment,” today’s children may suffer from an underestimation of their needs. Arlie Hochschild (20th century)

George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

A committee is an animal with four back legs.
    John le Carré (b. 1931)
