Perceived Dangers
As chat rooms are often frequented by minors, they can facilitate illegal sexual contact though studies have shown that this is not common, with the American Psychologist journal calling many of the fears 'myths'. Another term for this is 'technopanics.' Alice E. Marwick says 'The technopanic is an attempt to contextualize the moral panic as a response to fear of modernity as represented by new technologies.'

Famous quotes containing the words perceived and/or dangers:
“... anything a powerful group has is perceived as good, no matter what it is, and anything a less powerful group has is not so good, no matter how intrinsically great it might be.”
—Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)
“Anyone with a real taste for solitude who indulges that taste encounters the dangers of any other drug-taker. The habit grows. You become an addict.... Absorbed in the visions of solitude, human beings are only interruptions. What voice can equal the voices of solitude? What sights equal the movement of a single days tide of light across the floor boards of one room? What drama be as continuously absorbing as the interior one?”
—Jessamyn West (19021984)
