Brian John Peter Ferneyhough ( /ˈfɜrnihoʊ/, born 16 January 1943) is an English composer, and one of the central figures of the New Complexity movement in music. His music is characterized by the extensive use of irregular nested rhythmic tuplets and highly complex notation. As a pedagogue of music composition, he has held long tenures teaching at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, the University of California at San Diego, and currently Stanford University.
