Armenian Tradition
In the Armenian tradition, a cultural custom of blessing of the grapes is annually observed each August 12, the in religious commemoration of the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. While the blessing of the grapes are not exactly associated with the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, the blessing is nonetheless viewed as a liturgy of thanksgiving by farmers for a plentiful season of harvest and is generally considered a family day by the Armenian peoples. Women often bring baskets of grapes into the church, where a deacon or priest blesses the fruit after the Divine Liturgy and is then followed by a public meal or celebration.

Famous quotes containing the words armenian and/or tradition:
“The exile is a singular, whereas refugees tend to be thought of in the mass. Armenian refugees, Jewish refugees, refugees from Franco Spain. But a political leader or artistic figure is an exile. Thomas Mann yesterday, Theodorakis today. Exile is the noble and dignified term, while a refugee is more hapless.... What is implied in these nuances of social standing is the respect we pay to choice. The exile appears to have made a decision, while the refugee is the very image of helplessness.”
—Mary McCarthy (19121989)
“If we are related, we shall meet. It was a tradition of the ancient world, that no metamorphosis could hide a god from a god; and there is a Greek verse which runs, The Gods are to each other not unknown. Friends also follow the laws of divine necessity; they gravitate to each other, and cannot otherwise.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
