Missions Based On The 3MV Planetary Probe
Main article: 3MV planetary probe
The first three missions were based on the model 3MV planetary probe, intended to explore Venus and Mars. After two failures, Zond 3 was sent on a test mission, photographing the far side of the Moon (only the second spacecraft to do so) and continuing out to the orbit of Mars in order to test telemetry and spacecraft systems.

Famous quotes containing the words missions, based, planetary and/or probe:
“There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for ones own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.... Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didnt, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didnt have to; but if he didnt want to he was sane and had to.”
—Joseph Heller (b. 1923)
“I have no acting technique.... I act instinctively. Thats why I cant play any role that isnt based on something in my life.”
—Ethel Waters (19001977)
“We cannot cheat on DNA. We cannot get round photosynthesis. We cannot say I am not going to give a damn about phytoplankton. All these tiny mechanisms provide the preconditions of our planetary life. To say we do not care is to say in the most literal sense that we choose death.”
—Barbara Ward (19141981)
“Yknow scientists are funny. We probe and measure and dissect. Invent lights without heat, weigh a caterpillars eyebrow. But when it comes to really important things were as stupid as the caveman.... Like love. Makes the world go round, but what do we know about it? Is it a fact? Is it chemistry? Electricity?”
—Martin Berkeley, and Jack Arnold. Helen Dobson (Lori Nelson)
