Other Sports

As well as rugby union, Brooke played Gaelic football, both before and after his rugby career. Initially he was introduced to the game by fellow All Black Bernie McCahill at Auckland Gaels Gaelic Football Club. While living in London after his career he also turned out for St. Brendan's of London.

It was widely reported that he signed a contract to play rugby league for Graham Lowe's Manly club in the early 1990s, but subsequently changed his mind and stayed with rugby union.

Famous quotes containing the word sports:

There be some sports are painful, and their labor
Delight in them sets off. Some kinds of baseness
Are nobly undergone, and most poor matters
    Point to rich ends.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

It was so hard to pry this door open, and if I mess up I know the people behind me are going to have it that much harder. Because then there’s living proof. They can sit around and say, “See? It doesn’t work.” I don’t want to be their living proof.
Gayle Gardner, U.S. sports reporter. As quoted in Sports Illustrated, p. 87 (June 17, 1991)
