Term in Office
Despite promises for change, the stagnation that had characterized the entire post-communist period since 1989 persisted during Videnov's term, as did the shady privatization schemes, the underfunding of social services, government inaction against organized crime groups such as VIS-2, SIC and Multigroup, alleged government patronizing of dingy business groups (such as the so-called "Orion friend circle") and the emigration of young and educated Bulgarians. Despite this, the BSP still had popular support for a time, as it was able to win the local elections in 1995. One significant initiative was the government's launching of a campaign for mass privatization, in which ordinary middle-class citizens were to acquire shares in the factories and firms that were being de-nationalized.

Famous quotes containing the words term and/or office:
“A radical is one of whom people say He goes too far. A conservative, on the other hand, is one who doesnt go far enough. Then there is the reactionary, one who doesnt go at all. All these terms are more or less objectionable, wherefore we have coined the term progressive. I should say that a progressive is one who insists upon recognizing new facts as they present themselvesone who adjusts legislation to these new facts.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
“Woman was originally the inventor, the manufacturer, the provider. She has allowed one office after another gradually to slip from her hand, until she retains, with loose grasp, only the so-called housekeeping.... Having thus given up one by one the occupations which required knowledge of materials and processes, and skill in using them ... she rightly feels that whats left is mere deadening drudgery.”
—Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (18421911)
