Zenker's Fixative - Stock Solution

Stock Solution

Zenker is usually made with 50g of Mercuric chloride, 25g of Potassium dichromate, 10g of Sodium sulfate (decahydrate) and distilled water to complete 1000 ml.

Before use, 5 ml glacial acetic acid is added to 100 ml of the solution. Both the stock solution and the complete Zenker fixative are stable for many years.

If the glacial acetic acid is replaced by 5 ml of formalin (37–40% formaldehyde)), the resulting solution is Helly's fixative, also sometimes called "formol-Zenker". Helly is stable for only a few hours because the formaldehyde and dichromate components react, producing formic acid and chromic ions; the orange solution becomes greenish.

Famous quotes containing the words stock and/or solution:

There exists, between people in love, a kind of capital held by each. This is not just a stock of affects or pleasure, but also the possibility of playing double or quits with the share you hold in the other’s heart.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

I can’t quite define my aversion to asking questions of strangers. From snatches of family battles which I have heard drifting up from railway stations and street corners, I gather that there are a great many men who share my dislike for it, as well as an equal number of women who ... believe it to be the solution to most of this world’s problems.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
