According to the 2001 Ukrainian Census the population of the region is 1,929,200. Some 70.8% consider themselves Ukrainians, while 24.7% are Russians, the rest nationalities are Bulgarians (1.4%), Belarusians (0.7%), and others (1.6%). Almost half the population (48.2%) considers the Russian language their native.
