Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aligarh Muslim University was established about sixty years back. Ph.D., M.Tech., B.Tech. & B.E. (Evening) programmes are being offered. Ninety two students in B.Tech. and forty two in the three M.Tech. Courses (Thermal Engineering, Industrial & Production Engg. and Machine Design) are admitted every year on the basis of written competitive tests on all India basis. The department offers 85 UG & 33 PG Courses in the various disciplines of mechanical engineering. The Deptt. has a very well qualified teaching staff actively engaged in teaching & research and contributing effectively in administrative & corporate life of the campus. The faculty has published over 600 research papers in the International & National Journals of repute. Their participation in the International & National Conferences and Seminars has been quite encouraging and enthusiastic. Under the MODROB and TAPTEC programmes of the All India Council for Technical Education, a number of projects of the faculty have been funded this year amounting to Rupees fifty lacs.

The experimental computational and related facilities available in the department are located in the following Laboratories: Turbine/Pump, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics/Turbomachines, Microprocessor Applications, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Internal Combustion Engines, Heat Power, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Combustion & Pollution Control, Heat Transfer, Machinery Dynamics, Stress Analysis/Tribology, Production Engineering, Computers and Robotics, Material Science, Metrology & CNC, Quality Assurance, CAD & CAM.

We have recently established an Instructional & Research Resource Centre (IRRC) in the department to impart modern education through Multimedia Projection system. Dozens of audio-visual cassettes on state of the art information on current topics, software packages, over forty computers for our UG/PG students and fully furnished Conference room constitute this IRRC. Series of lectures by invited experts from Industries and Institutions are planned every year for the benefit of students and faculty.

It is heartening to note that our students are performing exceptionally well in GATE. This year alone 33 students qualified.

The students are taken on educational tour to various industries and have to undergo summer training (which is required part of curriculum) in order to acquire practical knowledge of modern machines, materials and processes. Training & Placement Office takes care of campus interviews and helps the students in getting suitable jobs.

Famous quotes containing the words department of, department, mechanical and/or engineering:

I believe in women; and in their right to their own best possibilities in every department of life. I believe that the methods of dress practiced among women are a marked hindrance to the realization of these possibilities, and should be scorned or persuaded out of society.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

All his works might well enough be embraced under the title of one of them, a good specimen brick, “On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History.” Of this department he is the Chief Professor in the World’s University, and even leaves Plutarch behind.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Industry has operated against the artisan in favor of the idler, and also in favor of capital and against labor. Any mechanical invention whatsoever has been more harmful to humanity than a century of war.
    Rémy De Gourmont (1858–1915)

Mining today is an affair of mathematics, of finance, of the latest in engineering skill. Cautious men behind polished desks in San Francisco figure out in advance the amount of metal to a cubic yard, the number of yards washed a day, the cost of each operation. They have no need of grubstakes.
Merle Colby, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
