Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

In 1978, Fisher founded the campaign to save the historic and battle-scarred World War II aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) from the scrapyard and transform it into America's largest naval museum. The ship became the center of New York City's Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, which hosts nearly one million visitors annually.

Famous quotes containing the words air, space and/or museum:

The air was clear. He seemed in ultimate peace

Except that he had no eyes. Rigid and bright
    Upon the forehead, furred
With a light frost, crouched an outrageous bird.
    Anthony Hecht (b. 1923)

Thus all our dignity lies in thought. Through it we must raise ourselves, and not through space or time, which we cannot fill. Let us endeavor, then, to think well: this is the mainspring of morality.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)

When I go into a museum and see the mummies wrapped in their linen bandages, I see that the lives of men began to need reform as long ago as when they walked the earth. I come out into the streets, and meet men who declare that the time is near at hand for the redemption of the race. But as men lived in Thebes, so do they live in Dunstable today.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
