The Modern Yule Goat
The Yule Goat in Scandinavia today is best known as a Christmas ornament. This modern version of the Yule Goat figure is a decorative goat made out of straw and bound with red ribbons, a popular Christmas ornament often found under the Yule tree or Christmas tree. Large versions of this ornament are frequently erected in towns and cities around Christmas time – these goats tend to be illegally set on fire before Christmas. The Gävle goat was the first of these goats, and remains the most famous.

Famous quotes containing the words modern, yule and/or goat:
“Certainly for us of the modern world, with its conflicting claims, its entangled interests, distracted by so many sorrows, so many preoccupations, so bewildering an experience, the problem of unity with ourselves in blitheness and repose, is far harder than it was for the Greek within the simple terms of antique life. Yet, not less than ever, the intellect demands completeness, centrality.”
—Walter Pater (18391894)
“As I went on Yule day
In our procession,
Knew I jolly Jankin
By his merry tone
Kyrie eleison.”
—Unknown. Jolly Jankin (l. Chorus.)
“There are some things, my dear Fisher, which do not bear much looking into. You undoubtedly have heard of the Siberian goat herder who tried to discover the true nature of the sun. He stared up at the heavenly body until it made him blind. There are many things of this sort, including love and death.”
—Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)
