Loanwords
Modern Yoruba has loanwords from diverse sources, including Islamic religious and Western cultural terms. From Arabic come adua/adura "prayer", "supplication" الدعاء ad-du'a; sanma, "heaven", "sky", السماء samaa`; Jimoh, "Friday", الجمعة Al-Jum'ah. Some of a large number of loans from English include: alaamu, "alarm"; baagu, "bag"; baafu, "bath"; gaseeti, "gazette"; baati, "bat"; siiki, "sick"; risiiti, receipt.
