Ioannis Vilaras was born on the island of Kythira, then part of the Venetian Republic; he later moved to Ioannina, his father's home-city. His father was a doctor in the area and he also studied medicine in Padova, Italy. His travelling to the Epirot capital, he was mainly a doctor. After the fall of Ioannina from the Turkish battleground, he fled to Tsepelovo in Zagori where he died three years later in 1823.
