Yeshiva Pri Eitz Chaim was a Chareidi (Litvishe) Yeshiva based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Yeshiva was established in 2004 by Rabbi Adam Saffer together with Rabbi Eichenstein and operated for three years; it was accommodated by the Kollel Yad Shaul in Gardens, Johannesburg. The Rosh Yeshiva was Rabbi Berel Eichestein, joined in 2007 by Rabbi Gedalya Sternstein. Rabbi Eichenstein delivered weekly lectures to the public, as well as to high school students, in addition to his Yeshiva duties.
The Yeshiva "taught many young scholars, guiding them in the delicate ways of correct understanding of all Torah learning". Some students joined the Yeshiva directly following high school, but the majority did so after first having studied overseas, including in the "Ivy League" Yeshivas of Israel and the UK. Students ranged in age from eighteen to thirty-five. The student body had fourteen full-time students, and eight part-time students. There was a yeshiva residence, with meals provided daily to the entire student body.
The Rosh Yeshivas: American-born Rabbi Eichenstein, a Torah scholar of world renown, had lived in Israel for over forty years. He headed yeshivos in Jerusalem for over 20 years, and subsequently was a pulpit Rabbi in New York. Rabbi Gedalya Sternstein, also American born, learned in Ner Israel Yeshiva of Baltimore under Rabbi Y. Ruderman, and thereafter in Mercaz Hatorah in Montreal, where he was mashgiach, and subsequently functioned as Rosh Yeshiva of Toras Emes high school in Johannesburg, for over 30 years.
