History
The initial 101.1 km (63 mi) section of Yeongdong Expressway, between Singal and Saemal, opened on December 1, 1971. It was extended by 91.5 km (57 mi) east to Gangneung on October 4, 1975. On November 29, 1991, it was extended west by 23.2 km (14 mi), from Singal to Ansan. Since then, various widenings have taken place, and 8-10 lanes are planned to open between Singal and Hobeop in 2009.
