Difficulties
The YPE and MI designs are highly specialized craft, designed to operate only under ideal conditions for record attempts. The location, Sandy Point, provides the unusual combination of very smooth water and high winds needed for record attempts. Even so, times when ideal conditions are available are scarce; in the 2007 season, one 28 day period yielded only 1.5 hours of good sailing time, in a 17-knot (31 km/h) wind, not enough for a record setting performance Every run also risks a crash, which, due to the lightweight nature of the craft, can result in disaster, such as in 2004 when a capsize destroyed the Macquarie Innovation. When this happens, the vessel must be rebuilt, costing time, money, and possible good sailing days. On the other hand, the YPE set the world record only 8 months after a crash that wrecked the vessel.

Famous quotes containing the word difficulties:
“If the underdog were always right, one might quite easily try to defend him. The trouble is that very often he is but obscurely right, sometimes only partially right, and often quite wrong; but perhaps he is never so altogether wrong and pig-headed and utterly reprehensible as he is represented to be by those who add the possession of prejudices to the other almost insuperable difficulties of understanding him.”
—Jane Addams (18601935)
“So far as my experience goes, travelers generally exaggerate the difficulties of the way. Like most evil, the difficulty is imaginary; for whats the hurry?”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The heroes of the world community are not those who withdraw when difficulties ensue, not those who can envision neither the prospect of success nor the consequence of failurebut those who stand the heat of battle, the fight for world peace through the United Nations.”
—Hubert H. Humphrey (19111978)
