Controversy

There has always been much controversy over Yellow Mama, the efficacy of the death penalty and the possibility that innocent people have been executed. One thing that could not be debated near the end of the electric chairs’ use was that the it was terribly outdated. Near the end of Yellow Mama’s life, in about 2001, electrocution was only used as a primary method of execution in Nebraska and Alabama. In the year 2000, Alabama lawmakers blocked a bill that would have changed the method of execution to lethal injections. However, in 2001, Alabama legislators started becoming more open to the idea of other means of execution. In fact, in an Associated Press survey, in 2001, 77 percent of senators and 63 percent of the House Members responded in favor of abandoning the electric chair in favor of lethal injections.

Famous quotes containing the word controversy:

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)
