International Career

He played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup where he scored a goal against Tunisia, which marked his great movement and composure in front of goal. He also played in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup where he was named the top goalscorer of the competition. Apart from this, he was the youngest Saudi captain ever, leading the national team to the final, while also being the top scorer in the competition.

Al-Qahtani was ranked highly in The World's Top Goal Scorers 2007 by IFFHS. He currently boasts an impressive 59 goals for Saudi Arabia. He captained Saudi Arabia in the 2009 Gulf Cup of Nations. He helped his teams to reach the final where they lost to hosts Oman on penalties.

Al-Qahtani failed to help Saudi Arabia to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World cup, where Bahrain were able to level the score in the dying moments of the closely contested match. On 19 April 2012, Al-Qahtani announced his retirement from international football after the national team's failure to qualify for 2014 FIFA World Cup.
