Before entering the specialized degree programs of YIC, students participate in the Preparatory Year Program, which includes 20 hours of English language tuition per week. There are two separate intensive English programs, corresponding to the two main tracks existing in the College: technical and business. Both of these programs share identical reading and writing components but separate ESP curriculum. On successful completion of the preparatory year program students will have improved their level of English enough to enable them to participate in degree level programs. Further English language courses are essential components of all the College's degree programs. As a result, the students' English language ability continues to improve as they progress towards graduation.

Famous quotes containing the word language:
“The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between ones real and ones declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink.”
—George Orwell (19031950)
“It is still not enough for language to have clarity and content ... it must also have a goal and an imperative. Otherwise from language we descend to chatter, from chatter to babble and from babble to confusion.”
—René Daumal (19081944)
“My God! The English language is a form of communication! Conversation isnt just crossfire where you shoot and get shot at! Where youve got to duck for your life and aim to kill! Words arent only bombs and bulletsno, theyre little gifts, containing meanings!”
—Philip Roth (b. 1933)
