Yamaha XS400 - Engine

Engine

The XS400 featured a four-stroke, air-cooled, overhead-cam engine that is commonly called a "parallel twin". While the twin cylinders are indeed parallel, the two pistons are offset 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation -- this arrangement greatly reduces linear vibration at the cost of some axial vibration. The 392 cc (23.9 cu in) engine produced 36 bhp (27 kW) @ 8100 rpm.

Famous quotes containing the word engine:

There is a small steam engine in his brain which not only sets the cerebral mass in motion, but keeps the owner in hot water.
—Unknown. New York Weekly Mirror (July 5, 1845)

Industrial man—a sentient reciprocating engine having a fluctuating output, coupled to an iron wheel revolving with uniform velocity. And then we wonder why this should be the golden age of revolution and mental derangement.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

The machine unmakes the man. Now that the machine is perfect, the engineer is nobody. Every new step in improving the engine restricts one more act of the engineer,—unteaches him.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
