Name
The Chinese name "Yalu" literally means "Duck Green", but the characters were chosen to phonetically approximate the original Manchu word "Yalu" in Mandarin. The Manchu word "Yalu" means "the boundary between two countries". The character "綠" in the Yalu (鴨綠) is normally pronounced lǜ when it's used as an adjective "green," but here it is pronounced lù and the usage of the reading lù is nonsensical in this name. To a Chinese speaker, these all reinforce the purely phonetic nature of the name. The Korean name is the Korean pronunciation of the Chinese characters.
