Yadkin River - Lakes Created By The Yadkin/Pee Dee River

Lakes Created By The Yadkin/Pee Dee River

There are many reservoirs created by damming the Yadkin and Pee Dee rivers within the bounds of North Carolina, and are listed from upstream to downstream:

  • W. Kerr Scott Reservoir
  • High Rock Lake
  • Tuckertown Reservoir
  • Badin Lake
  • Falls Reservoir

All but W. Kerr Scott generate hydroelectric power, which are managed by Alcoa under contract with the US Government, under FERC oversight. The contract with FERC expired in April 2008 and as of February 2011, is currently under review after the N.C. Division of Water Quality revoked their water-quality certificate that the company needs to continue operating its power-generating dams along the river. The governor of North Carolina, Bev Perdue, and other North Carolina politicians have made it a priority to recapture the Yadkin River water rights, an action that will require a vote in the United States Congress.

Famous quotes containing the words lakes, created, pee and/or river:

I walk toward one of our ponds; but what signifies the beauty of nature when men are base? We walk to lakes to see our serenity reflected in them; when we are not serene, we go not to them. Who can be serene in a country where both the rulers and the ruled are without principle? The remembrance of my country spoils my walk. My thoughts are murder to the State, and involuntarily go plotting against her.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It is sentimentalism to assume that the teaching of life can always be fitted to the child’s interests, just as it is empty formalism to force the child to parrot the formulas of adult society. Interests can be created and stimulated.
    Jerome S. Bruner (20th century)

When writers meet they are truculent, indifferent, or over-polite. Then comes the inevitable moment. A shows B that he has read something of B’s. Will B show A? If not, then A hates B, if yes, then all is well. The only other way for writers to meet is to share a quick pee over a common lamp-post.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)

It is ... despair at the mutability of all created things that links the Artist and the Ascetic—a desire to purify and preserve—to set oneself apart—somehow—from the river flowing onward to the grave.
    Michele Murray (1933–1974)
