Quasi-War

The Quasi-War was fought at sea by warships and armed merchant ships, with each side seizing merchant ships and attacking the other's warships. President Adams sent negotiators to France on January 18, 1799, who eventually negotiated an end to hostilities through the Treaty of Mortefontaine in September 1800. This agreement was made with the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, who had overthrown the Directory in the Coup of 18 Brumaire in November 1799.
