Xavier High School (Connecticut) - Engineering Club

Engineering Club

The school is home to an engineering team named The Falcons. This club was started in 2008 by Mr. Michael Humphreys a physics, engineering, and math teacher at the school as well as an alumnus. Each year the club competes in the Real World Design Challenge, an aeronautical design competition. The 2009/2010 team won the state competition with their fuel efficient aircraft the "Millennium Falcon", named after the starship in Star Wars as well as tying in the team name. The objective for the state competition was to design the empanage of a given baseline business jet as well as the horizontal and vertical stabilizers. The design utilized a V-tail positions at a 45° dihedral angle. After winning the state competition, the team moved on to the nationals where they competed against twenty-six other states. The national competition included the adding on of wings to the design, created a system that consisted of the stabilizers, tail cone, and wings that needed to work together to create a fuel efficient aircraft. Unfortunately they did not place.

The 2010/2011 team again won the state level competition, and at the National Competition were awarded first place honors.

Famous quotes containing the words engineering and/or club:

Mining today is an affair of mathematics, of finance, of the latest in engineering skill. Cautious men behind polished desks in San Francisco figure out in advance the amount of metal to a cubic yard, the number of yards washed a day, the cost of each operation. They have no need of grubstakes.
Merle Colby, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

The barriers of conventionality have been raised so high, and so strangely cemented by long existence, that the only hope of overthrowing them exists in the union of numbers linked together by common opinion and effort ... the united watchword of thousands would strike at the foundation of the false system and annihilate it.
