History
Xara was founded by Mark Hinkley. It began years ago as a camp at Burning Man. The first independent Xara event took place in 2003 in Dulzura, San Diego County, at Madre Grande. That year it drew 200 people. It grew to an attendance of 400 in 2004 and attracted 850 people in 2005.
Xara developed close associations with The Mutaytor, as they often collaborates on shows of increasing scope.
The final Xara Dulzura festival took place in 2006. In 2007, problems with Madre Grande's neighbors led to the cancellation of the festival, and in November of that year, fire destroyed most of the structures at the monastery, precluding further festivals there. Plans were announced to hold a "Xara Los Padres" festival in the Los Padres national forest near Los Angeles in 2010, but they never came to fruition.
