World Champions By Number of Title Match Victories
The table below organises the world champions in order of championship wins, and is current through the World Chess Championship 2012. (For the purpose of this table, a successful defence counts as a win, even if the match was drawn.) Famous quotes containing the words world, champions, number, title, match and/or victories:
“From his childhood onwards this boy will be surrounded by sycophants and flatterers.... In due course, following the precedent which has already been set, he will be sent on a tour of the world and probably rumours of a morganatic marriage alliance will follow, and the end of it will be the country will be called upon to pay the bill.”
—James Keir Hardie (18561915)
“Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most mens reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of the rat race is not yet final.”
—Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)
“My tendency to nervousness in my younger days, in view of the fact of a number of near relatives on both my fathers and mothers side of the house having become insane, gave some serious uneasiness. I made up my mind to overcome it.... In the cross-examination of witnesses before a crowded court-house ... I soon found I could control myself even in the worst of testing cases. Finally, in battle.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“And Reason kens he herits in
A haunted house. Tenants unknown
Assert their squalid lease of sin
With earlier title than his own.”
—Robert Bridges (18441930)
“A strong tiger is no match for a pack of wolves.”
—Chinese proverb.
“And, Better defeat almost,
If seen clear,
Than lifes victories of doubt
That need endless talk-talk
To make them out.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
