President Woodrow Wilson
The bridge is named in honor of the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924), who, when elected in 1912, was serving as the Governor of New Jersey, but who was native of Staunton, Virginia. While he was President, Wilson reportedly spent an average of two hours a day riding in his automobile to relax, or to "loosen his mind from the problems before him."
President Wilson was an advocate of automobile and highway improvements in the United States. In 1916, he stated "My interest in good roads is... to bind communities together and open their intercourse, so that it will flow with absolute freedom and facility."

Famous quotes containing the words woodrow wilson, president and/or wilson:
“America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
“The President has paid dear for his White House. It has commonly cost him all his peace, and the best of his manly attributes. To preserve for a short time so conspicuous an appearance before the world, he is content to eat dust before the real masters who stand erect behind the throne.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“It is from quiet places like this all over the world that the forces accumulate which presently will overbear any attempt to accomplish evil on a large scale. Like the rivulets gathering into the river, and the river into the seas, there come from communities like this streams that fertilize the consciences of men, and it is the conscience of the world that we are trying to place upon the throne which others would usurp.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
