- Canadian Rule - If the dealer (last to bid) has more points than any other player (not a tie for the lead), he may not bid a number of tricks that would make the total number of tricks equivalent to the number of cards in the hand, unless he does so by bidding zero.

Famous quotes containing the words optional and/or rules:
“Our father presents an optional set of rhythms and responses for us to connect to. As a second home base, he makes it safer to roam. With him as an allya loveit is safer, too, to show that were mad when were mad at our mother. We can hate and not be abandoned, hate and still love.”
—Judith Viorst (20th century)
“One might get the impression that I recommend a new methodology which replaces induction by counterinduction and uses a multiplicity of theories, metaphysical views, fairy tales, instead of the customary pair theory/observation. This impression would certainly be mistaken. My intention is not to replace one set of general rules by another such set: my intention is rather to convince the reader that all methodologies, even the most obvious ones, have their limits.”
—Paul Feyerabend (19241994)
