The Main of Winter Sports
The term 'Winter sports' refers to sport that take place on snow and ice. Keen competition has grown up around them, and the Winter Olympics are held every four years. There are two main types of skiing:
- Alpine Skiing, which features downhill and slalom racing.
- Nordic Skiing, which is a cross-country sport that also includes ski jumping.
A new type of skiing, freestyle, is about performance rather than speed. In sled racing, riders hurtle down a special runs. Skating includes figure, ice hockey, and racing.

Famous quotes containing the words main, winter and/or sports:
“The main effect of a real revolution is perhaps that it sweeps away those who do not know how to wish, and brings to the front men with insatiable appetites for action, power and all that the world has to offer.”
—Eric Hoffer (19021983)
“Digressions, incontestably, are the sunshine;Mthey are the life, the soul of reading!take them out of this book, for instance, you might as well take the book along with them;Mone cold external winter would reign in every page of it; restore them to the writer;Mhe steps forth like a bridegroom, bids All-hail; brings in variety, and forbids the appetite to fail.”
—Laurence Sterne (17131768)
“In the past, it seemed to make sense for a sportswriter on sabbatical from the playpen to attend the quadrennial hawgkilling when Presidential candidates are chosen, to observe and report upon politicians at play. After all, national conventions are games of a sort, and sports offers few spectacles richer in low comedy.”
—Walter Wellesley (Red)
