Famous quotes containing the words winter, hill, transmitting and/or station:

And in spite of all the dishonour,
The broken standards, the broken lives,
The broken faith in one place or another,
here was something left that was more than the tales
Of old men on winter evenings.
Only the faith could have done what was good of it....
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

Tawny are the leaves turned, but they still hold.
It is the harvest; what shall this land produce?
A meager hill of kernels, a runnel of juice.
Declension looks from our land, it is old.
    John Crowe Ransom (1888–1974)

Anyone who has obeyed nature by transmitting a piece of gossip experiences the explosive relief that accompanies the satisfying of a primary need.
    Primo Levi (1919–1987)

[T]here is no situation so deplorable ... as that of a gentlewoman in real poverty.... Birth, family, and education become misfortunes when we cannot attain some means of supporting ourselves in the station they throw us into. Our friends and former acquaintances look on it as a disgrace to own us.... If we were to attempt getting our living by any trade, people in that station would think we were endeavoring to take their bread out of their mouths.
    Sarah Fielding (1710–1768)
