Williams Air Force Base

Williams Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) base, located in Mesa, and about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. It is a designated Superfund site due to a number of soil and groundwater contaminants.

It was active as a training base for both the United States Army Air Forces, as well as the USAF from 1941 until its closure in 1993. Williams was the leading pilot training facility of the USAF, supplying 25% of all pilots.

    just like you sitting
    there they come and talk to me, just the same.

    They come to bother us. Why? I said I don’t
    know. Perhaps to find out what we are doing.
    Jealous, do you think? I don’t know.
    —William Carlos Williams (1883–1963)

    I recently learned something quite interesting about video games. Many young people have developed incredible hand, eye, and brain coordination in playing these games. The air force believes these kids will be our outstanding pilots should they fly our jets.
    Ronald Reagan (b. 1911)

    Mine ear is much enamoured of thy note;
    So is mine eye enthrallèd to thy shape;
    And thy fair virtue’s force perforce doth move me
    On the first view to say, to swear, I love thee.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    For those who are base in judgement do not know the good they hold in their hands until they cast it off.
    Sophocles (497–406/5 B.C.)
