Later Career
Belknap moved to Philadelphia, after resigning as Secretary of War, then returned to Washington to resume the practice of law. Belknap, his reputation damaged by the Senate trial, never returned to hold political office. In 1887, Belknap coauthored the book History of the Fifteenth Regiment, Iowa Veteran Volunteer Infantry.
