American War Between The States

When the American War Between the States started, Belknap, a loyal Democrat, joined the Union Army in the Autumn of 1861 and was commissioned Major in charge recruiting the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on December 7. Belknap, a tall and handsome man, was naturally suited to the rigors of being a soldier and he taught new enlistment companies coming into Iowa.
